The Veronica Mars Movie Is Upon Us, And It's Important

March 14th might well go down as one of the most important dates in cinematic history, and nothing major is happening. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt aren't sitting down with Oprah to discuss their (seemingly decades-spanning) divorce. George Clooney won't reveal that his whole career has been one long prank, and he's really a married father of two from Topeka. Alfred Hitchcock probably isn't coming back from the dead, ready to declare war on the blondes and homosexuals that he loves and hates so much. No, Friday, March 14th is the official premiere date for the little Kickstarter movie that could: Veronica Mars.

Now, I don't mean to be hyperbolic, but the Veronica Mars movie is a genuinely important touchstone in film and television history. Over the last decade or so, there has been a power shift in the way fans of shows are treated by the general public and by the very people and shows that they are fans of. It used to be that die-hard fans were relegated to the sticky floors of Conference Room B, desperate for a view of a C-List actor at whatever half-hearted convention was being thrown.  Filmmakers like George Lucas derided the fans' input (he has since – wisely – recanted on his earlier beliefs), and there was shame even among the fans themselves. Hit Or Miss: Quick Movie Reviews 2!

Sometimes it's difficult to get through a full movie review, so we here at Tableau Your Mind wanted to offer you the quickest possible insights into some of the movies playing at the multiplexes this week and ask a simple question: should you HIT the movie theater to see this movie, or is is more of a MISS?

Wanderlust

Displaced by the economy and short-sighted real estate decisions, a married couple (Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, who anchor the film admirably) decides to spend some time in a commune in order to figure out their lives. David Wain and Ken Marino's script is funny, but it's certainly less weird and ballsy than their previous films. Especially given the subject matter, the two don't go far enough into the absurd. The only real fun is seeing Wain, Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter (longtime collaborators on too many amazing projects to list) square off as news anchors in two throwaway scenes that are delightful and absurd. The film needs more of that. It is still very funny, and Ken Marino and Michaela Watkins, as Rudd's brother and sister-in-law, are great and steal the few scenes

Hollywood Couples We Root For

With Hollywood couples breaking up and hooking up at lightning speed, it’s difficult to get one’s hopes up about true love. It seems almost impossible to just date over in Tinsel Town, and it’s even harder in Los Angeles (many Tinsel Town relationships are ruined by roving bands of elves). Every relationship is under intense scrutiny, and famous people are forced into serious relationships very quickly. Occasionally, though, a couple seems destined to make it. Here are the couples we here at Tableau Your Mind are pulling for. They will probably split up in a week.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard - As with most couples on this list, they are low key and mostly off the radar. Probably due to being New York Celebrities, Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard - or SarsHaal (Gyl-gaard? Sarsenhaard?) - live in relative anonymity. They are such a slow-burn couple that they almost veer into boring (Timberlake and Biel, anyone), but stay adorable due to their general likeability and air of Bohemian lifestyle. And that lifestyle thankfully never veers into Boho-Chic, a phrase I know only because of my unending fascination with Mary-Kate and Ashley, formerly of the Olsen Twins.
